Our Story

While living in the Philippines, mum and daughter Angela and Yasmin noticed the hardship and vulnerability single mothers faced. In an effort to help, they started Above Rubies, a small livelihood project with a dream. Their goal was to create job security, dignity and hope to struggling families by making quality products they could be proud of. Beginning in a small room making paper bead jewellery, they saw first-hand the transformation the project was making in the lives of each woman.

It wasn't long before their first shipment of teddies landed in New Zealand, which proved popular at local markets. As demand increased for handmade ethically- sourced toys, Above Rubies increased their product range to what you see today.

Under Yasmin's creative direction, the project now employs seven talented women. It's not only self-sustaining but supporting other families in need in the way of school sponsorship and other day-to-day necessities.
